A5 Veg Tan Waxed Leather Heritage Journal Refillable Midori Travelers Notebook Blue
This is something a bit (lot!) special.
Our new Heritage Journal, a beautifully patinated refillable travellers notebook designed to look lived in and well loved from day one and will only get better with age, telling its own colourful story.
Made from leather rescued from the oak pits at the now disused Clayton's tannery in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, it offers a gloriously unique appearance. Clayton's used an oak tanning process for their veg tan leather, using bark and leaves to create the tannins needed. We've managed to source some of the last batch to be made in those pits before the tannery closed. They have an unusually mottled colouration which we just fell in love with. The leather is finished as a pull up leather - this means that it is impregnated with oils and waxes under heat and as the leather moves and stretches in use it produces a two tone effect. This one is a deep blue and has lovely mottling and striping to it, almost like mackerel patterns.
As this is a finite and not reproducible batch of characterful leather, we've decided to make a limited run of Heritage Journals with it - to offer you a piece of Derbyshire history that will age beautifully and bring you years of joy. Each part of the hide is different in its colouration and feel, so though these notebooks are similar, each is completely unique and will have different markings and characteristics.
A5 in size, we've designed this one with gunmetal metal eyelets, a rich dark red waxy veg tan bullhide leather tag and light turquoise elastics throughout for an aesthetically satisfying colour palette that looks and feels just right. We hope you love it as much as we do! Brown and green also now available. Comes with our new Scribology bookmark on a narrow ribbon to help you keep your place.

About Scribology Notebooks
Scribology was founded by us at Makers & Menders to offer UK-made, handmade, refillable leather Travellers' Notebooks and Journals—a sustainable alternative to mass-produced, plastic-based faux 'leather' that peels, cracks, and ends up in landfill.
We create versatile, high-quality notebooks designed to be cherished for years. Our A5 covers come with dot grid (ideal for Bullet Journals), lined (perfect for notes and writing), or sketchbook inserts (great for artists). A6 covers are available with lined or sketchbook inserts for on-the-go creativity. Each cover holds at least two inserts, allowing you to organise projects easily, with refills always available for a seamless journaling experience.
If you love variety, our Change-It-Up Kits let you refresh your notebook’s look with coloured elastics and leather closure tags—so you can switch things up without buying duplicate "stuff."
Every notebook makes an environmental statement:
Revival Collection – Crafted from reclaimed and recycled upholstery leather, giving it a second life.
Heritage Collection – Made from rare leathers from now-closed tanneries—exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces.
Legacy Collection – Crafted from high end UK shoe industry leather remnants, repurposing luxury materials and reducing waste.
Each collection has its own story, appeal, and price point—which one will you choose?

We currently use three different grades of leather.
Our Revival collection makes use of leather that was previously used for upholstery and which would have been sent to landfill or incineration without our intervention. We source our recycled leathers from our local community and clean, grade and repurpose them to give them a new life. The leather is a lighter weight than our premium leathers, but has a nice supple handle and comes in some gorgeous colours.
Legacy leathers sourced from reputable small UK businesses. The leather is generally of a heavier weight and is thicker and stiffer than the recycled upholstery leathers. We select hides that have character to them, such as embossing, depth of colour or texture to bring you a product that will age gracefully and bring pleasure to the owner for many years to come. Many of these leathers originate from high end/luxury shoe and bag manufacturers - workbench remnants - and are pieces that cannot be used by them due to their shape/size or the location of flaws.
Heritage & veg tan leathers. These are made in the traditional way, using an oak bark or other plant based tanning process. The heritage leathers are what was left over when some of the once many UK tanneries shut down (e.g. Clayton’s in Chesterfield, Derbyshire). These are superb quality and we use every scrap!

We are working on a way to make our notebooks customisable. In the meantime, if there’s any particular combination of leathers/elastics/tags/eyelets that you would like making for you - or even a custom size, please get in touch. This includes making a wider notebook with multiple elastics to take more inserts. You can browse our archive of sold items here for inspo!
We also offer midori repair kits with extra elastic and closure tags so you can either upgrade the look of your notebook, or replace older elements.
