I chose to work from a tightly cropped image to unlock the inherent dramatic intensity of this piece – particularly the glowing light and shade on lashes and skin. The iconographic downcast gaze, so reminiscent of late-medieval Madonnas, is here playfully juxtapositioned with the light-caught folds of the ubiquitous modern-day hoodie.
